Chinese trio fight way into Women's Table Tennis semifinals

Updated: 2008-08-21 20:10:47

(BEIJING, August 21) -- World No. 1 Zhang Yining, World No. 2 Guo Yue and third seed Wang Nan, all of China, beat their respective opponents to enter the Women’s Table Tennis semifinals to be held Friday morning at the Peking University Gymnasium.

Zhang Yining met a serious threat in Feng Tianwei of Singapore. Feng drove Zhang all the way to the fifth game, which Feng lost by a mere two points. Wang Nan won her match against Tie Yana of Hong Kong with the same 4-1, but her fight was a much easier one compared to Zhang’s. Guo Yue scored a 4-0 victory over Wu Xue of the Dominican Republic. It was not an easy win, however, as the score suggests, considering one of the games went to a depth of 16-14.

World No. 6 Li Jiawei of Singapore ended the progress of the only US player in the quarterfinals, Wang Chen, by winning their match 4-1.

In Friday’s semifinals, Zhang Yining will play Li Jiawei and Wang Nan will face her teammate Guo Yue.
